The University of Education (PH), which has been based in Ludwigsburg since 1966, is the largest of the six universities of education in Baden-Württemberg. The universities of education have the right to award doctoral degrees and grant habilitation, and are thus on par with universities. They focus on issues in educational science in both research and teaching. The Ludwigsburg University of Education sees itself as a modern center of excellence for educational sciences in four closely interrelated areas: school education, out-of-school education for children and youth, adult and continuing education, and education in the cultural and social sectors.

Key Areas

A major focus of the university’s academic profile is its bachelor’s and master’s degree programs for teacher certification in elementary school, lower secondary school, European lower secondary school, and special education (B.A./M.Ed.). For vocational education, the PH offers a Master of Science degree. Starting in January 2016, a collaborative “Professional School of Education” was established in partnership with the universities and colleges in Stuttgart. Here, the partners collaborate primarily on the master’s programs in teacher education.

Offers

A distinctive feature of three additional bachelor’s degree programs is the integration of educational science and subject-specific pedagogical approaches to out-of-school educational fields (early childhood education and care, educational science, and cultural and media education). In addition, students can specialize in specific professional and research areas through six additional master’s programs or, while working, qualify for leadership positions in the education sector through two professional development master’s programs, one of which is an international program. In addition, the PH is actively involved in continuing education through certificate programs.
