The State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, with a history spanning more than 250 years, is one of the largest art colleges in Germany. With 18 degree programs in the departments of Fine Arts, Architecture, Design, and Art History and Conservation, it offers students a wide range of research and study opportunities. In addition to artistic work in classrooms and studios, more than thirty teaching workshops—including metal and woodworking shops, bronze casting and painting technique workshops, printmaking workshops, and workshops for media, photography, and computer-aided design (CAD), provide excellent opportunities to bring ideas and concepts to life in both analog and digital formats. The workshops are central to artistic education and serve as places where the interdisciplinary nature of the ABK Stuttgart becomes evident.

Key Areas

The academic programs offered at the ABK Stuttgart include diploma programs in Fine Arts (with specializations in sculpture, photography, printmaking, glass design, installation, ceramics, painting, performance, video, and drawing), stage and costume design, communication design, textile design, and industrial design. Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs are offered in the following fields: Architecture; Art Education with a focus on Fine Arts; and Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage (with programs in paintings and painted sculptures; archaeological, ethnological, and craft objects; works of art on paper, archival and library materials; mural painting, architectural surfaces, and stone polychromy; as well as the conservation of new media and digital information). The State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart has the right to award doctoral and postdoctoral degrees and is thus one of the few art colleges in Germany with university status. Opportunities for advanced academic training extend to the fields of architecture, art studies, art history, media theory, art education, and philosophy. In addition, the postgraduate program “Master Student in the Weissenhof Program of Fine Arts” is offered.
