The Stuttgart region is one of Europe’s strongest economic and technological hubs. Both at home and abroad, people associate the Stuttgart region with innovative strength, inventiveness, creativity, dedication, and reliable work performance. The region’s universities and research institutions are highly productive and excel in teaching and research.

There are already many partnerships between comparable types of higher education institutions, as well as an increasing number of cross-sector networking projects. However, a wide range of opportunities for collaboration between higher education institutions and research organizations remain untapped. Furthermore, while collaboration between the academic world and prominent representatives of the business community is well established, educational and research institutions and small and medium-sized enterprises have not yet formed networks in many parts of the region.

These two observations, among others, led to the founding of the “Hochschul- und Wissenschaftsregion Stuttgart e.V.” on July 25, 2011. This initiative aims to expand its membership base beyond the area’s universities to include the region’s research institutions, local businesses, university communities, and foundations.

According to its bylaws, the association’s purpose is to promote science, research, and teaching, as well as education and continuing education in the Stuttgart metropolitan region; to foster networking among universities, colleges, academies, scientific institutions, and local companies; to improve the transfer of knowledge between academia and industry; to carry out research and educational projects; and to enhance the public perception of the Stuttgart region as a hub for higher education and science.

The bylaws list the following measures for achieving the association’s purpose: cooperation, networking, and funding projects; the creation of new educational and continuing education programs; the provision of opportunities for students, interns, and alumni; support for the public image of educational and academic institutions; as well as networking and informational events, summer schools, workshops, and conferences.
